THE EMPEROR AND THE NIGHTINGALE
An ancient Chinese emperor believes that one of the most beautiful and valuable things in his empire is the song of the simple and plain nightingale. The nightinagle agrees to leave the forest to reside at the royal court. However, the blissful kingdom is disturbed when an ornate, bejeweled, artificial bird is introduced and quickly becomes the emperors favorite. When the mechanical bird breaks down the emperor is bereft and becomes very ill. Only the song of the true nightingale can heal him. Suggested for grades K and up.
