The Tempest
The Alternative Arts Collective will present an adaptation of The Tempest as a story occurring in the mind of a once a highly regarded director of the stage who is now suffering from Alzheimer's and Dementia. Casting was gender-blind, and all characters will be justified according to the gender of the actor cast in the given role. The play begins in a seemingly simple bedroom, circa 1940. A few hours from the end of his/her life, the director imagines and conjures up a perfect production of The Tempest taking place in the bedroom. Plants erupt from the floor boards, rain drops from the coffered ceiling, and Caliban, Prospero, and all the characters of the Bard's final piece enter from the bow of a ship that has crashed through the bedroom wall. The island takes over the room to accomplish the imagery the director has created for The Tempest. Always on stage, the ailing director moves about the room, instructing the actors and giving direction as they live the story before his/her (and our) eyes. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to The Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
