Behind the Scenes of Porgy and Bess with Ernest Parks
Speaker: Ernest Parks, Former Cast member of Porgy: A Gullah Version
In 1924, DuBose Heyward was a businessman absorbed in his Charleston heritage. One year later he was the world-famous author of Porgy. Just a decade later George Gershwin transformed Heywards book into an opera that would become one of the most enduring masterworks of American music. In this four- part lecture series, learn about the real life characters and Gullah culture that inspired Heywards story, the controversies that have plagued its production, and how the sights and sounds of our city are the uncredited characters in a story set squarely in the midst of Charlestons renaissance and the burgeoning preservation movement.
