Delicate textures of classical Egyptian music with Tareq Abdallah and Adel Shams El-Din
Abdallah's playing is deeply rooted in Egyptian classical music, yet infused with a dazzling spark of individuality. (...) Tareq Abdallah proves that you don't have to redefine genre to create something vivid, fresh and wonderful.

Adel Shams El-Din is considered one of the most talented riqq players, capable of resonating, in turn, each of the ten pairs of metal jingles around the instrument. Introduced to percussion by his older brother, Adelmade his stage debut at the age of 11. He studied with the brilliant composer and musicologist Fathi Guened who taught him not only the basic rhythms of percussion but also the Arab maqam. Already established with a reputation of master musician in his late twenties in Egypt, Adel left his double career as soloist with the Radio of Alexandria and mechanical engineer with the Egyptian railways to move to Europe in order to focus on his career as a musician. His exceptional technique, exquisite sound, and vast knowledge of rhythmic cycles from Middle Eastern music to jazz and flamenco make him the most sought after riqq player on the international stage today. He insists on playing the traditional Egyptian fish skin riqqs because in his words, The sound is the soul of the instrument; and that sound creates the soul of the music. He has recorded more than 50 CDs and has worked on a dozen film scores. He also recorded a solo album, Forty Rhythms of the Middle East, (Buda Musique) and is co-founder of Ensemble Al-Kindiand with whom he has toured the world.

Tareq Abdallah is an Alexandrine composer and interpreter born in 1975. He draws his inspiration from the "Nahda", the golden age of the art of Egyptian oud solo (1910-1930), an era which also lies at the center of his intellectual explorations. Awarded a diploma by the Arab Oud House of Cairo in 2005, he now lives in France where he is pursuing a PhD in Musicology at the University Lyon 2. Tareq instructs a number of courses, master classes and workshops across the Mediterranean to share and popularize the knowledge connected to the 'oud. He also collaborates with a range of artists spanning the jazz, baroque music, contemporary dance, theater and World Music genres.
