12:10:15: Life and Death of a British Martyr
Proteus Theatre Present 12:10:15: Life and Death of a British Martyr by Clive Holland.
A hundred years apart, two women's lives are defined by conflict. A war-hardened, cynical 21st century war correspondent is being held in a Middle Eastern city. As she awaits her fate, she finds surprising parallels and strength recounting the story of Edith Cavell, a WW1 nurse who was shot as a spy by German forces on 12th October 1915. Martyrs or spies, traitors or freedom fighters: history is littered with the bodies of women used as propaganda. This gripping one-woman show is written by Thanet-based playwright/actor Clive Holland and explores the female experience of war in an uncompromising and fiercely contemporary performance.
Her visceral fear and rage is compounded by a sense of shame, that she cannot match Cavells reported dignity and refusal to condemn her killers. Edinburgh Reporter *****
