MONKEY IN THE MIRROR
This special event features the return of Asian Story Theater's original Monkey King, Green Dragon-style kung fu master Dwight Love. MONKEY IN THE MIRROR also features favorites Gingerlily Lowe (our original White Snake, Amaterasu, and Kuan Yin) and Rhys Green (Pigsy and many other comic roles), plus newcomer Kiki Yeung, whose one-woman show SECOND CHANCES FOR GRACE performs at the Chinese Historical Museum earlier in April. The musical score includes a performance by koto and fusion artist Reiko Obata.
MONKEY IN THE MIRROR includes a dozen characters from the classic JOURNEY TO THE WEST mythology, yet this particular show is based on a surprising secondary source. Approximately 50 years after the JOURNEY was first published in the late 16th century, just as (and perhaps because) the Manchu dynasty was establishing its control over China around 1640, a "supplement" to the original novel was published, titled "The Temple of Myriad Mirrors." This secondary bit of fan fiction is filled with subtle political commentary, with a surprising internal, mind-of-the-monkey perspective that some consider the first modern novel. However, on stage all that background stays in the background. MONKEY IN THE MIRROR is foremost a playful comic adventure story for the whole family, with martial arts, traditional puppets, music, lovely costumes, and a busy cast.
