Finland's most daring contemporary musician revolutionizes the accordion and shatters traditional musical standards. Kimmo Pohjonen started playing accordion early in life and studied at Helsinki's Sibelius Academy. However, he originally hated his instrument. Entranced by the music of Tanzanian Hukwe Zawose, Pohjonen traveled to study with him. That profound experience transformed him into a 'proper Musician'. After years seeking his own path, Pohjonen finally dared to tamper with the accordion by integrating electronic devices within. That act was his liberation, thrusting him into a new musical sphere. His changes to accordion are tantamount to the introduction of electric guitar and keyboard decades earlier. Playing with innovation and adventure, Pohjonen enriches his music with extraordinary sounds from the accordion's bellows, electronic samples of accordion and other noises. Using only accordion, voice and effects he transcends all musical genres. His performances are reminiscent of the violence of Roman gladiators and the self castigation of medieval monks. He performs with some of the world's best known musicians, e.g. Kronos Quartet, and has created projects like 'Earth Machine Music', with farmers and machines, and 'Accordion Wrestling' with Finnish wrestlers. The film is a journey of an exceptional artist grounded in basic human truths. The cinematography and drama reveal a distinctive Scandinavian viewpoint. From the startling opening - the hero walks across an expanse of ice and drops through a hole into frigid water - to the very end, a dramatic pace draws the viewer in, revealing the inner struggle of this iconoclast.
