Reconvergence
At the core of humankind's ethos is an ongoing struggle to come to terms with the impermanence of self. Reconvergence offers an intriguing exploration of mortality, consciousness and identity in the modern age from the perspectives of four distinct characters: a naturalist, a neuroscientist, a poet and a historian. The combination of their separate journeys creates a rich tapestry that weaves together several complex facets of the existential dilemma. The film's characters include the following: Naturalist Eustace ConwayDissatisfied with modern society, Eustace Conway left home at 17 to live in a tepee in the mountains of North Carolina. He constantly pushed himself to confront the hardships of the natural world through an ever increasing disconnect with modern America. His journey helped him discover his ultimate goal, the creation of a wild land preserve that could serve as an epicenter for cultural revolution and lead modern Americans to a closer connection with the cycles of life and death. Neuroscientist Pete EstepHorrified by the idea of mortality since childhood, Pete Estep set out to attain pagan immortality through music. Ultimately realizing that he was not talented enough to achieve such immortality, Pete shifted gears to become a Harvard trained neuroscientist. A proponent of Glogging , Pete now works to advance theories on how captured and stored archival data can be used to preserve individual identities after death, and to resurrect the minds of the deceased. First on Pete's list to bring back...Jerry Garcia.Historian Waite RawlsWaite Rawls grew up in Richmond, VA fascinated by 18th and 19th century history. At the height of his career as an investment banker, hoping to live out the virtues he most admired from his study of history, Waite quit his job to become the Director of the Museum of the Confederacy. During his tenure at the museum, Waite used modern recording technology and recently discovered recordings of Civil War veterans to resurrect a single aural phenomenon that had been lost in the past: the mysterious confederate Rebel Yell. Poet Caleb WhitakerCaleb Whitaker grew up on a farm in Virginia. Alone in a rural setting he turned to works of poetry in an attempt to find companionship and 'inhabit many different characters, live many lives'. Inspired by written correspondence between author William Burroughs and poet Allen Ginsberg, Caleb traveled to the city of Iquitos, deep in the Peruvian rainforest, where he began working with the hallucinogenic drug Ayahuasca. His work led to a revelatory experience, which he maintains allowed him to leave his body and come face to face with God, destroying the illusion of past, present and future forever. Reconvergence combines these separate stories through a series of fascinating intersections that create a compelling and unexpected examination of our shared instinct to search for meaning in life and death, connect to the past, and look to the future.
