ABOUT the Organizers:
CALI & CO dance/Matt EL music are comprised of longtime collaborators Christine Cali (dance director) and Matt Langlois (music director). Their work collides at the midline of Contemporary Dance and Modern Rock Concert, while dissecting conventions of artistic form and social constructs. Through a meshing of technique with improvisation, technology with body, precision with wild abandon, motion with live sound, theory with practice; CALI & CO dance/Matt EL music build their work through a rigorous collaborative approach where the human spirit is celebrated for all of its temporality, and physicality and consciousness are pushed toward the center, edges and beyond. CALI & CO dance/Matt EL music challenge creative process and build their work through a rigorous collaborative approach. CALI & CO dance/Matt EL music is a fiscally sponsored project through Dancers Group.
Background on WAH! Fest 2016
Our interest in establishing WAH! Fest as an ongoing opportunity for women artists has formulated during the past five years as a platform for women to continue to become more prominent and present in the arts. Recently, there has been a spike in inquiries around where are all the women choreographers and directors in dance? We too have been frustrated with the current inequalities and lack of opportunities available at a higher rank for women in ALL fields, and specifically as dance directors. Building this festival with an emphasis on women artists but also with a specificity of the kind of work created, work through a feminist lens, seemed like the perfect response to address an inadequate system. WAH! Fest will respond to our 21st century dance climate and continuum. WAH! Fest will speak to our current trends and dance/art practices, WAH! Fest will support diverse women artists through rebellious, wild and masterful contemporary work; demanding value and space for our voices, bodies, and minds.
