"Exit Cuckoo (nanny in motherland)" - Presented by Ubuntu Theater Project
"Exit Cuckoo (nanny in motherland)"
by Lisa Ramirez
directed by Michael Moran

Ubuntu Theater Project is proud to continue its inaugural season by featuring the WEST COAST PREMIERE of "Exit Cuckoo (nanny in motherland") written and performed by award-winning playwright Lisa Ramirez, who recently won the prestigious Helen Merrill Playwriting Award and current resident playwright with the Playwright's Foundation.

"Exit Cuckoo" is a one-woman show performed by the critically acclaimed actress and playwright, Lisa Ramirez. Ramirez journeys through the looking glass of a divided country in which the essence of motherhood is being sacrificed on both sides of the economic divide. Lisa Ramirez exemplifies the war being fought between modernity and humanity's most sacred responsibility of child rearing.

Lisa Ramirez uses the lens of a Latina nanny in the upper east side of NYC to share this true account of the challenges women still face in motherhood -- how mothers of extreme wealth often face existential crises they expect their nanny's to solve for their children and how immigrant mothers are leaving their children in developing countries to nanny in the United States. This play reveals the private and incessant entrapment women still struggle with as they face the ultimatum between child rearing and pursuing their careers, how the line between nannying and mothering is maddeningly thin, and how women are too often forced into relating to one another solely based upon socio-economic status and the humanity that is sacrificed therein.
