Come focus on tools and improving your technique as Ashley Harwood demonstrates and teaches the Seven Fundamentals of a Perfect Cut.

Ashley will work with you at your level of experience.

Spindle turning is the foundation of woodturning; it provides an understanding of the material that transfers to all forms of turning, including bowl turning.

The first day of class will begin with the fundamental cuts used in spindle turning. We will be practicing and repeating these cuts, aiming for no torn grain and a perfect finish with each pass of the gouge.

We'll work on achieving a good understanding of freehand grinding for sharpening tools using a bench grinder and platform. Then we'll practice the push cut around the outside of a bowl, aiming for one pass all the way around the outside with no torn grain and no strain on the body.

We'll talk about the Seven Fundamentals of the Perfect Cut, which address all of the variables of woodturning including:  lathe speed, stance, tool rest placement, chucking, sharpening, grain orientation, and technique.

The second day of class will continue with bowl turning. We will practice the cut around the outside of a bowl using the "push cut" technique and a 40/40 ground bowl gouge.

On the inside of the bowl, we'll focus on an even, thin wall with no torn grain. Finally, the bowls will be jam-chucked for finish turning. We'll review tool sharpening techniques as well as the Seven Fundamentals.  By improving technique, the cut quality can become nearly flawless, requiring minimal sanding.

No experience required for this class.

You must be a member of the Northwest Washington Woodturners to attend. Non-members will need to pay the $35 membership dues in addition to the class fee. See our website to join now - www.nwwwt.org.
