Peep Hole Diorama Installation workshop with artist Tine Kindermann
Date: Saturday, March 12th
Time: 12pm to 4pm
Admission: $125
Location: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 Third Avenue, 11215 Brooklyn.

In this workshop, Berlin-born artist Tine Kindermann will teach the art of making a "Guckkasten" or peep-hole installation, using wooden boxes or crates, found objects and small figurines sculpted from polymer clay. Based on folk traditions going back as late as the 18th century, when traveling showmen all over Europe, but also in Asian countries, would display boxes on fairs that allowed the viewer a glimpse into worlds they would otherwise never get to see, "Guckkästen" (peep hole installations) draw us into fascinating miniature worlds that satisfy both the voyeur and the child in us.

Materials provided will include wooden wine boxes, found objects ranging from doll house furniture to obscurely twisted metal scraps, polymer clay, paint, night lights and all the hardware needed to build a Guckkasten. Students will learn how to make an anatomically correct figurine, build a miniature environment inside a box and experiment with designing the best lighting for their project. Participants are encouraged to bring their own materials like ready made dolls, miniature objects, boxes and drawers etc..

Tine Kindermann is a German artist living in New York City who grew up with a grandfather who painted tin soldiers and built miniature sets for them. A trained set painter, she started making dioramas and peep hole installations in 1997, and was delighted to find out that by using "metal, wood, rags and bones" she found in the streets of the Lower East Side she was continuing the tradition of the infamous German ragpickers of "Ragpicker Paradise" in that same neighborhood. Tine's work, a lot of which is based on German fairy tales, has shown in NYC and abroad and can be found in the collections of Cheryl Henson and Iggy Pop. She also plays the singing saw.
