Creepoid / Wildhoney / Geist and the Sacred Ensemble / Crab Action
Philadelphia's Creepoid has been quietly churning out slow, heavy, and foreboding rock songs over the course of four releases in the last five years, but singer/guitarist Sean Miller says that their forthcoming Cemetery Highrise Slum"feels like [their] very first record." At the very least, this new collection feels like their most fleshed-out release to date, fulfilling the gloomy promise of their doom-laden brand of slowcore by mixing in a glassy-eyed sense of melody that'd make Meat Puppets proud. ~SPIN Magazine
Wildhoney's brand of shoegaze borders more on indie pop than it does shoegaze. Sure the guitars do get distorted here and there, but the overall sound this EP is pretty clean and shimmery. I actually really like Your Face Sideways a lot. It's got a good fast pace to it and some warm, bright vocals to it that keeps it from getting dull.
Geist & the Sacred Ensemble forge a doom-inflected folk ritualism; dirges tinged with Eastern psychedelia and meandering meditative trances. The singing is with a deep and slow delivery, further heightening the groups mystic aspirations and heady sonics. At their greatest, Geist & the Sacred Ensemble's tunes exist as an ever-changing pilgrimage; transforming their abstract drifts into apocalyptic folk hymns or private confessionals. In addition to acoustic and electric guitars, bass and percussion kits. They use gongs, gamelans, banjo and tools like power drills, hammers and chains to add texture.
Crab Action are Harrisonburg's fines psychedelic punk rockers.
