Francesco Vezzoli film night
Rennie Collection is pleased to present, for one night only, an evening of cinema on May 25, 2012 by Italian artist Francesco Vezzoli. This event, which runs from 7-9pm, is the first exhibition of Vezzoli's work in Vancouver, with all proceeds from ticket and drink sales to benefit UNIT/PITT Projects.

Trailer for a remake of Gore Vidal's Caligula (2005) is a star-studded imaginary remake of the original controversial and depraved 1979 film. Marlene Redux: A True Hollywood Story! (2006) makes a mockery of celebrity documentaries by following the rise and fictional fall of Vezzoli himself. Lastly, GREED, A New Fragrance by Francesco Vezzoli (2009) is a fabricated perfume advertisement featuring Michelle Williams and Natalie Portman, directed by Roman Polanski. Shown on a loop over the course of the evening, the films will be projected almost 4.5 metres (15 ft) high in one of the main exhibition rooms at Wing Sang.

Admission to film night is $10 which includes one drink; tickets can be purchased online here or with cash at the Rennie Collection office during regular office hours (9 am - 5 pm, Monday-Friday). Due to the nature of the films, this event is strictly 19+. All films are courtesy Galleria Franco Noero, Torino with special thanks to Whistler Water and Kronenbourg 1664.

Francesco Vezzoli's work explores melodrama, humour, and glamour, gravitating towards famous film directors, authors, fashion designers and pop icons, who star, contribute, or are referenced in his work. He studied at Central St. Martin's School of Art in London from 1992 to 1995. Vezzoli's work has been exhibited at many institutions including The New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (2002); Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea, Turin (2002); Fondazione Prada, Milan (2004, 2005 and 2011); Museu Serralves, Porto (2005); Le Consortium, Dijon (2006); Tate Modern, London (2006); Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (2007); Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2009); Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2009-2010); Kunsthalle Wien (2009); the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture, Moscow (2010); and Gagosian Gallery, NYC (2011). His works have also been included in several biennials such as the 2006 Whitney Biennial, the 49th and 51st Venice Biennials, the 26th São Paulo Biennial; and the 6th International Istanbul Biennial.

UNIT/PITT Projects (formerly the Helen Pitt Gallery) is a non-profit artist-run centre dedicated to the promotion of experimental contemporary art that addresses social, political, cultural, and critical issues. We promote and facilitate public dialogue concerning critical awareness, social consciousness, contemporary art practices and community. From our small presentation and office space at 15 East Pender Street in Vancouver, we present visual art, performance, video, web-based projects, low-power radio, music and books by artists, and public actions.

Rennie Collection has evolved over a number of years to focus on works related to identity, social injustice, appropriation, painting and photography. Bob Rennie has garnered an international reputation as a dedicated collector, amassing one of the largest collections of contemporary art in Canada. In 2009, renovations were completed on the oldest building in Vancouver's Chinatown to display the collection to the public. Rennie Collection at Wing Sang holds two exhibitions a year with supporting catalogues and events.
