JAZZ LEGEND LUQMAN HAMZA QUARTET CONCERT
Luqman Hamza, KC's legendary jazz pianist and vocalist, will perform Sunday, May 6th, at Pilgrim Chapel in Kansas City. Mr. Hamza is the 2012 recipient of the Heritage Series Musician Award, which annually recognizes an outstanding area musician whose body of work represents a major contribution to Kansas City's musical heritage. The live performance by Mr. Hamza and his quartet including Rick Anderson (bass), Will Matthews (guitar) and Marvin Jones (drums) will be recorded on CD to preserve for posterity the music and vocals of this great 80-year-old artist. The importance of this recording cannot be underestimated. In 2010, the Heritage Series produced the only recording of the Wild Women in performance. A key member of that group, Myra Taylor known as KC's "First Lady of Jazz" died last year at the age of 94, so there will never be another recording of the original group.
Mr. Hamza's musical roots began in the early 1940s when he was a teen hanging out in the 18th & Vine jazz district. After considerable piano and voice training, he performed with several local groups as well as with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie. Today, he performs at clubs in and around Kansas City and St. Louis.
