The City of Benedict Della Crosse
Six weeks before election day, down eighteen percent to a three-term incumbent, an idealistic candidate for Wisconsin State Senate turns into a mercenary for public office. The candidate publicizes rumors saying his opponent, a leader of the Weather Underground Organization in 1969, set off bombs in public buildings to advocate the overthrow of the United States government. The rumors captivate the media and the electorate, and the candidate draws even with his opponent. Two days before the election, the candidate receives evidence with which he can corroborate the rumor and win the election, but betray himself.
