The Year I Was Gifted
The year is 1969, and a scholarship kid from Nebraska's trying to survive at the Interlochen Arts Academy: motto, "Guiding America's Gifted Youth." She's guided by her first gay friend, the young Bill Sherwood, who would grow up to write the groundbreaking film "Parting Glances." She must do "something memorable" in her major to be able to return next year, and writes a performance piece denouncing the expulsion of her gay friends. When Bill tells her the conservative head of the school will be at the performance, she has to decide; should she cancel her protest to keep her scholarship?

Written and performed by award-winning playwright Monica Bauer
Directed by Carolyn Ladd

REVIEWS

"This comic semi-autobiographical piece is a gorgeous wee gem of a show... Her performance is engagingendearing and entertaining left me genuinely moved." Scots Gay magazine

"The Year I Was Gifted tells the true story of how a woman lied her way into the most prestigious performing arts school in America. A one woman show delivered with passion and enthusiasm, The Year I Was Gifted is engaging and thought provoking." Broadway World Scotland

"Bauer's an engaging storyteller, and, in a festival where so many young people are starting out in performing arts, she has something important to say not about the decision to become an artist but about the moment you decide what kind of artist you want to become." The Scotsman

"Bauer is an undeniably gifted storyteller with a unique voice and an endlessly fascinating story. engrossing solo showher story is compelling, and her mid-Atlantic WASP-in-training impersonation of Sherwood is a riot. It is clear that she learned something that year that can't be purchased for any amount of tuition money: Real art speaks truth to power, and it can be deadly threatening to the status quo." Theatermania

"Playwright Monica Bauer has a way with words.  And she's a natural-born story teller.  And she can act.  And she's funny.  All of these talents come together beautifully in her one-woman show "The Year I Was Gifted". Bauer delivers a kind of perfect performance art rich in exquisite detail." Stage Buddy
