OTHELLO THE MOOR OF VENICE
Ninjaz of Drama is proud to present
OTHELLO
The Moor of Venice
By William Shakespeare
The greatest tragedy in the English language

Directed by Rey Carolino

THE TRAGEDY OF OTHELLO, THE MOOR OF VENICE
Beginning in Venice, Italy and concluding at the island of  Cyprus off the coast of Turkey, the play focuses on four central characters- Othello, a Moorish General of the Venetian armed forces and his new young wife Desdemona; Cassio, his lieutenant, and his trusted ensign, Iago.

SYNOPSIS
Passed over for a promotion and enraged at other perceived slights Iago conjures up a horrific plan of revenge against his General. He successfully convinces the Moor into believing his wife is carrying on an affair with his lieutenant. At first doubtful and confused, Othello succumbs to Iago's gross insinuations and diatribes. Set upon the breaking point Othello orders the assassination of Cassio and in a fit of irrational passion murders his loyal and loving wife who declares her innocence in her dying breath. Iago commits his own horrors by killing a corrupt colleague and his own wife Emilia who discovered his crime against Othello and Desdemona.

With its timely themes of love, jealousy, racism, and betrayal, Othello for more than 400 hundred years has been performed by professional companies and amateur performing groups to high school productions and has been reinterpreted for film, dance, and television and continues to influence artists, performers, and writers.

San Francisco actor, playwright, director Rey Carolino stages this enduring classic of world theater in a contemporary setting at the beautiful and intimate 49 seat Phoenix Theatre in San Francisco's historic Theater District near Union Square with a cast of wonderful Bay Area talent featuring San Francisco Shakespeare Festival regulars David Abad as Iago and Livia DeMarchi as Desdemona, and New York born actor Federico Edwards in the title role of Othello.
