Los Angeles Playwrights Lab Presents... "Beginnings"
What happens when L.A. writers get tired of complaining? The LOS ANGELES PLAYWRIGHTS LAB is born, co-founded by Robert Gardner and Michael Shaw Fisher. The group's mission: to produce original works from the writer's perspective.

"Beginnings" is the Los Angeles Playwrights Lab's first production of shorts.

WHAT:

"The Disconnect," by MEREDITH SIMONDS: A recently-widowed woman tries to rewrite the history of her 35-year marriage through the social media-saturated love lives of her three grown daughters. Directed by Lisa Pelikan, and starring Ann Bronston as Pam, and Heather Long, Jennifer Riley, and Joy Darash as her daughters.

"Baby Toes," by JUNE CARRYL: Emmy is turning 40. Her ex just got married and they have unfinished business. Baby Toes is about growing up and moving on. Directed by Chris Raymond, starring Yasmina Sommers as Emmy and Matt Crabtree as Fred.

"Land of the Blacks," by MICHAEL SHAW FISHER: When a New Yorker gets lost in the park, she meets a strange man from another time. What follows might be bizarre, magical, and frightening but it is always The Land of the Blacks. Directed by Jennifer Chambers, starring Rickie Peete and Yale Berkovich.

"Summer House," by KATIE LETIEN: The truth will set us free or send us running. After learning about her husband's affair, Jewels leaves him only to find herself in another place of familiar pain. Directed by Katie Letien, starring Tracey Silver, Suzan Mikiel, Alicia Lara, and Tanya Fairfoot.

"Bolshoi Bullshit," by ROBERT GARDNER: A famous Ballet Master's return from the hospital causes a crisis in his family and his Ballet company. Directed by Harold Apter, starring Tom Badal, Mike Fallon, Alma Devani, Michelle Castillo, and Evan Silverman. Choreographed by Minerva Vier.

Director of The Disconnect:

LISA PELIKAN received an Artistic Director's Award (ADA) for her direction of Interact Theatre's 'night, MOTHER. Both her leading actors were nominated for the ADA Best Actor Award, and one of them received the award. Ms. Pelikan has worked professionally in the theatre as an actor and director for 30 years. She was last seen Off-Broadway in the hit screw-ball comedy, PANACHE, at the Players Theater. NYC world premieres include Arthur Miller's THE AMERICAN CLOCK and Jim Leonard's THE DIVINERS. She has received numerous awards for her acting work including an LA Drama Critics Circle Award for the West Coast premiere of Craig Lucas's BLUE WINDOW and a Drama-Logue Award for creating the infamous Zelda Fitzgerald in the world premiere of the one-woman show, ONLY A BROKEN STRING OF PEARLS, now titled, ZELDA. Director of Baby Toes:

CHRIS RAYMOND is a graduate of the American Film Institute, the National Shakespeare Conservatory and California Institute of the Arts. Following graduation, he founded the Orinoco Theater Company. Off-Broadway and regional theater productions include "Lost in Yonkers" and "Antony and Cleopatra." Recent screen-writing credits include "The Yard Sale," "The Joshua Tree," and "Daughter of Heaven," based on the life of China's only female Emperor Wu Zetian. He has won the Alfred P. Sloan Screenwriting Award and AFI's James K. Fadiman Award for Excellence in Screenwriting as well as recognition by Chesterfield, the Nicholl's Fellowship, and the Sundance Feature Film Lab. He has recently optioned and is developing bestselling author D.M. (The White Hotel) Thomas's lyrical novel about the JFK assassination titled Flying In To Love, for the screen.

Director of Land of the Blacks:

JENNIFER CHAMBERS directing credits include the world premier of Stephen Belber's "The Muscles in Our Toes" at the El Portal, "Yog Sothoth," "The Third Best Debater" and "Here to Serve You" at San Pedro's Little Fish Theatre, Suzan Lori Park's "365 Play/365 Days" at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. She has assisted Jonathan Moscone on Cal Shakespeare's production of "Man and Superman" and Liz Diamond on Catherine Treischman's "Crooked" at the Women's Project Theatre. She was the assistant director of the Piedmont Children's Theatre and has directed autobiographical theatre pieces at the Living Arts Center in Berkeley, California. She is professional actress and has performed on Broadway, along with numerous regional credits and has written and performed two autobiographical solo pieces, "Choices" at the Marsh Theatre and "Mine" at the California Institute of Integral Studies. She has an undergraduate degree in theatre arts from Northwestern University and a master's degree in counseling psychology with a concentration in drama therapy from The California Institute of Integral Studies.

Director of Summer House:

Katie Letien, a recent transplant from NYC, is very thankful for her partnership with L.A. Playwrights Lab. While in NYC Katie produced and director several of her own original plays as well movie shorts and webseries.

Director of Bolshoi Bullshit:

HAROLD APTER is an Emmy winning writer and producer whose credits include both daytime and prime time TV and features.  He teaches screen and television writing at USC School of Cinematic Arts and has recently written the screenplay for a new Brazilian feature film.
