Call and Response: September Edition
The fifth Call and Response concert highlights the music of composer Mark Oleszko. writing for a chamber ensemble of flute, clarinet, two violins, viola, cello and piano, he explores the warm textures the ensemble can create. The first piece "I Want A Story" is an instrumental excerpt from Oleszko's show #LoveStory, which recently premiered in the New York Fringe Festival. The rhythmically complex piece constantly shifts the focus to different performers and unique combinations of the ensembles' voices. "Why Should I Wait," which adds a tenor vocalist to the chamber ensemble, is a soaring work of modern musical theatre. The song's lyrics tell the story of a young person seeking to set out on own's one for the first time, while the string and woodwinds trade nimble lines reflecting that sense of adventure.
