The Passion Story
In 1920 Dr. Eric Millner-White, then Dean of King's College, Cambridge (and famous for introducing the celebrated Service of Nine Lessons and Carols there in 1918), proposed to Charles Wood, organist of Gonville & Caius College, the composition of a work based on the Gospel of St. Mark.  The Passions of Bach were on a scale altogether too ambitious for a college choir, so Wood composed his for organ and chorus with Evangelist and other soloists, and it was premiered the following Good Friday at King's.  Employing the plainsong tune Pange lingua ("Sing, my tongue") as a sort of unifying melodic thread (much like Bach employed familiar chorales), the work is austere and poignant, and performed appropriately here during the weekend of Palm Sunday.
