About the cause:

"More than 1,000 people are dead and 807 are still missing in the Philippines after the southern region was hit by typhoon Sendong. President Aquino declared a state of national calamity on Tuesday December 20, 2011. The Philippine national disaster agency said Cagayan de Oro and Iligan in the Mindanao region have the greatest number of casualties, 338,000 people in 13 provinces affected, 43,000 are homeless."
