"The Language Archive," recipient of the 2010 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, awarded to women who have written distinguished works for the English-speaking theater, is a magical, quirky and offbeat comedy.  The cast of unique characters will capture your heart, warm your soul and enliven your spirit.

"The Language Archive" is the name for George's library that stores tapes of dead languages.  The play begins with a look into the intricacies of Mary (Danielle Devitt) and George's (Gabriel Frey) marriage and Mary's struggle to communicate with her husband, who is stilted emotionally and seemingly unaware of her deep suffering.  George, a brilliant linguist who archives dying languages, is lost in his work and oblivious to the reality of his own marriage and the 'reality' around him.  His assistant, Emma (Megan Palagi) is in love with her boss and manages to hide her affections, since "if he were going to fall in love with me he would've done it by now."

In the midst of all these heart-felt struggles between the three main characters, the mood of the play shifts with the arrival of Alta (Mary Clay Connoway) and Resten (Frederic Ireland), the last two living speakers of the Elloway language, which is on the brink of extinction.  Written as a fable, several intriguing characters emerge throughout the play:  a baker, David Hudson, a jogger, Alison Shaw, the inventor of Esperanto, Rob Barlow and the language teacher, Elaine Jennings, passerby, Patricia Quinn.

"The Language Archive" is directed by Sharie Renault; set design and graphics by Chris Zinn; lighting by Kevin Horowitz; music and sound by Sharie Renault; stage manager, Patricia Quinn; marketing & PR director, Elaine Jennings.

Presented by the Calistoga Theater Co.
The play runs 1 hour 40 minutes.

Critical acclaim for "The Language Archive:"
"Uniquely blends absurdist fare with sentimental comedy."
The Los Angeles Times.

"The Language Archive's" dialogue is a tour de force
the gulf between what's said and what isn't is rarely described and traversed with as much power as it is here.  What makes this achievement more significant still is that the play itself is in no way ordinarypassionatewise and wonderful."
Talkin' Broadway

"Quirky, but ravishingly well-written piece that is smart, funny, deep and tender."
