THE VILLAGE MOVEMENT -- REDEFINING AGING IN PLACE IN SAN LUIS OBISPO -- NAOMI KOVACS
Wouldn't it be wonderful to live in a village where everyone knew, cared about and looked after each other?  Unfortunately, that's rarely an option today, but help may be on the way.  "Virtual "Villages" can create that link from seniors to neighbors and "helpers" so that people of all ages are  empowered to continue living independently in their own homes, while staying active and engaged.

Virtual villages provide access to a wide range of services and resources, including social, educational, wellness and cultural programs designed to help their local seniors to successfully "age in place" in their homes and neighborhoods as they grow older.  There are more than 150 villages in the U.S. and abroad, including nearly 30 in California (and 25 more in development).  One is as close as Santa Barbara.

This course will give participants an overview of the virtual village concept, its origins, and its development into a national movement.  Naomi Kovacs, who was Executive Director of Santa Barbara Village, will explain how establishing one in San Luis Obispo might enrich the lives of local seniors by helping them age in place.

Your instructor will describe the history and vision of the Village Movement, provide an overview of Village models, and will share her experience helping launch and run Santa Barbara Village.  She will also describe what it takes to launch a Village, what it means to be a part of a Village and how Villages are making notable differences in people's lives.

Naomi has an extensive background in working in community development, including serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Africa, and with non-profit organizations both as staff and volunteer. She has a BA in Psychology and BA in French from UCSB, and a Master's degree in Public Administration from USC. She has been Santa Barbara Village's Executive Director, helping to launch it in January 2012.
