Joseph Lelyveld: The Human Side of Mahatma Gandhi
Reconsidering Gandhi's extraordinary struggles, Joseph Lelyveld (Great Soul) deepens our sense of his achievements-and disappointments. Lelyveld, once a New York Times correspondent in India and later the newspaper's executive editor, chronicles Gandhi's sense of mission, social values, and philosophy of nonviolent resistance; the heroic and tragic last months of his long campaign; and his ever-evolving legacy. As a result, Gandhi emerges as one of history's most remarkable self-creations, who more than six decades after his death still ensures his place as India's social conscience and not just India's. Presented by the Town Hall Center for Civic Life with Elliott Bay Book Company. Series media sponsorship provided by PubliCola. Series supported by The Boeing Company Charitable Trust and the RealNetworks Foundation.
