Saturday September 12th. 6.30 pm
The History of Light
A new three-act play by Michael Small
with Songs by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan
Set in Gilded Age New York of 1886 when one percent of the population lived in garish splendor while masses of immigrants struggled for survivalThe History of Light tells the story of Frederick and Alice Winslet, heirs to a fortune from a sugar dynasty. When the idealistic young newlyweds decide to bankroll an exciting new electric invention that they hope will benefit rich and poor alike, they collide with unexpected challenges that threaten their values and their marriage. Against the backdrop of the Haymarket riots and the dedication of the Statue of Liberty, The History of Light invokes the feeling of the times with reinvented versions of sixteen Gilbert and Sullivan songs.
