Ohana Arts Fall Festival of Music: Rendez-vous a Paris
Music at Manoa and Ohana Arts Festival presents "Rendez-vous a Paris," a celebration of French art song and vocal Chamber Music, featuring soprano, Rachel Schutz, mezzo-sopranos Maya Hoover and Laurie Rubin, pianists Jonathan Korth and Djordje Nesic, and the Momenta String Quartet.
As the height of 19th- and 20th Century European energy, glamor and artistic expression, Paris was the city of genesis for some of the greatest artists, poets, musicians and masterpieces the world has ever seen. "Exotic" songs by Bizet, Gounod, and Faure open the evening's program followed by Faure's cycle "La bonne chanson" and Chausson's "Chanson Perpetuelle" with their rich textures of piano and string quartet. These pieces embody the quintessential French spirit. The poetry of Baudelaire, as interpreted by foreign composers, offer a contrasting perspective with songs by British composer Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji, and University of Hawaii's new faculty composer Jeff Myers. Then, we end our night's journey in a Parisian Cabaret with songs of Poulenc, Weill, and Satie. We hope you can join us for our very own meeting in Paris, an exploration of eclectic and richly textured repertoire for various combinations of voices, instruments, and ideas.
