Life and Death Over Coffee
In one fell swoop, sixty-year-old Michael Gates Gill lost his job, his family, his good health, and his financial independence. Desperate for health insurance, Gill took a job as a barista in a Manhattan Starbucks. The decision was life-altering.
Meanwhile, comedian/filmmaker Mark Malkoff set off on an expedition to visit 171 Manhattan Starbucks franchises in one day. While not life-altering, his quest became a stimulating subject to film and talk about. Gill will read from his memoir, "How Starbucks Saved My Life", and lead a coffee-tasting. Malkoff will screen his film "171 Starbucks" and discuss his disorienting day with America's favorite coffee.
This event is presented as part of the First Person Festival of Memoir and Documentary Art, November 7-11. For more information, see www.firstpersonarts.org.
