Intro to Commercial Urban Farming
A workshop presented by the Sustainable Commercial Urban Farm Incubator (SCUFI) program and sponsored by Green & Healthy Communities of Nashville.
November 12th & 13th, 2011, 8am 6pm, Nashville, Tennessee
Featured Trainers:
Andy Pressman, of Nomadic Farms of New Hampshire, is a sustainable agriculture specialist with the National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) and operates his small suburban farm in Wilton, New Hampshire.
Andy will share with you how he uses the SPIN Farming system to run a multi-lot 1 acre urban farm that operates a 70-member CSA that's on track to gross $70,000 in his 2011 season.
If Andy can do it so can you!
James Kalin, of the SCUFI program, an urban farm business incubator that trains urban farmers and helps them secure financing, land for their own commercial urban farms, and an urban farm home to rent or own.
James will describe how the SCUFI program works. He will also explain how your commercial urban farm can generate additional profits by integrating your farming operations into the grounds, structures and systems of neighboring buildings and businesses. He will describe a special farm home rental or ownership program for SCUFI trainees.
A team of workshop trainers will help you...
Learn how the SPIN farming system and SCUFI program can help you build your own high-income urban farm. Hear how the SCUFI program can help you with training, financing, and securing land to launch your own urban farm business. Meet people at the forefront of the growing sustainable commercial urban farm field, share ideas, gain knowledge, pool resources and form alliances to build your own profitable urban farm.
Saturday: Indoor lectures and demonstrations.
Sunday: Outdoor hands-on field and business exercises at a Nashville garden site.
Nomadic Farms Andy has been with NCAT since 2007 as a Sustainable Agriculture Specialist, working in the fields of organic crop production, season extension, local foods, urban agriculture, and farm energy. Andy has an MS degree in Sustainable Systems from Slippery Rock University and has a background in small-scale intensive production systems, including Permaculture design, Grow-Biointensive, and SPIN-Farming. He has extensive experience in market farming and has worked on and managed diversified farms in Ohio, Vermont, Colorado, Virginia and Pennsylvania.
People taking the two-day training also become eligible to apply for an urban farm training plot at a SCUFI program site in the Nashville area or elsewhere.
