Comics Stripped starring Johnny Steele & Larry Brown
Comics Stripped is a hybrid between NPR's This American Life and Woody Allen's Broadway Danny Rose - everybody telling great stories about a similar topic, sort of This American Comedians Life. Join series creator and host Dave Pokorny, who spent a decade on the road working with such talents as Ellen DeGeneres, Jim Carrey, and Bob Saget (to name just a few) as he invites national headlining comedians to Main Stage West to share not only their act, but their story as well.
Though still promising a load of belly laughs, don't expect your typical evening of standup. Comics Stripped is unique: you won't get this intimate with these same performers at any other venue. This is your chance to learn about the performers. Why do they do this? How did they get into the business? What's it like up there all alone when you're bombing? What's it really like to be out on the road? What's the first joke they wrote? What happened the first time they went on stage and tried to make people laugh? This is the only show where you can get these and many more questions answered.
At a Comics Stripped show you'll get more than just comedians doing their act. They'll be sharing the good, the bad and the ugly of what it takes to make a roomful of people laugh. It promises to be an extremely fun night and it's your chance to take a look at the other side of humor.
"I'm thrilled to bring this series to Main Stage West," explains Pokorny, "one of the things most people don't know is that in comedy clubs, the comic is pressured to generate joke after joke, and get three to four laughs per minute. They don't get to relax on stage they don't get to open up, but in this show, I take away that pressure and the comics get to unveil themselves up there. They share their stories while making you laugh at the same time."
Pokorny says, "The reason I came up with the title Comics Stripped is the comics are up there "stripped" if you will, talking to the audience like they were a bunch of close friends." He continued, "I like to capture the feeling of interesting stories that just "happen" to have punch lines to them. We really want to get to know the performers as more than just somebody coming up there and making half an hour's worth of smart-aleck remarks." The first show in this new series is August 31st. Come see what it's all about.
