Workshop: Back to Basics w/iO Founder Charna Halpern (SF Improv Festival 2011)
Back to Basics: Improv Fundamentals with iO's Charna Halpern
This is a very rare Bay Area opportunity to study with the legendary Charna Halpern. Charna will be teaching a back to the basics improv class but that doesn't mean it wont be perfect for those of you who are advanced. The basics are everything you need for beginning and advanced improvisation and she will even dabble in long form to take you to the next level. This is the real thing, folks, you might never have another chance at such a deal.
Charna Halpern has been teaching performers how to work together for more than 28 years. Her world-famous I.O. theaters in Chicago and Los Angeles are the meccas of training in the art of improvisation, and they act as a "recruiting" stop for television shows like "Saturday Night Live," "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" and "MADtv," supplying New York and Hollywood with writers and performers. Charna and her Los Angeles theater, iO West, starred in the 20th season of MTV's The Real World, where she trained the roommates in improvisation. Charna's books Truth in Comedy and Art By Committee act as a guide for theaters and improv groups around the world that teach and perform improvisation. Specializing in creating a "group mind" with hilarious end results, Charna shares her secrets and skills in order to give businesses the creative edge they need to compete in the corporate world. She also travels to universities around the world to teach her creation- longform improvisation.
Charna was hired by the American Embassy to go to Cyprus to work with the Greek and Turkish Cypriots and foster peace and agreement. She most recently traveled to Switzerland to work with the particle physicists at CERN who created the large Hadron Collider, which people feared would create a black hole. Charna got them to work together, thus single-handedly saving the world.
The alumni whose talents she has honed include Tina Fey, Mike Myers, Chris Farley, Amy Poehler, and an entire generation of North America's best and brightest comic minds. The Workshop will take place over two four hour sessions. Saturday August 20th and Sunday August 21st from 1 PM to 5 PM.
