Overview
Interactive performance techniques and material generating skills are becoming increasingly important in the theatrical landscape. With the increase of Immersive and gameplay theatre, interactive performers and directors with a strong process of generating immersive content, are becoming more and more important and sought after.
The structure and depth of character and dialogue with the audience can hugely enrich the experience for them, and make the creation of the material much more satisfying for the performance maker. Through a system of structure and improvisation, meaning and narrative can be brought to the fore, whilst still giving the audience a sense of control over their experience.
Our workshop sessions enable theatre makers to identify what role they will need to base their characters upon, develop an intuitive sense to create dialogue, and enable a sense of control when working in chaotic environments. The sessions are also great for directors, helping to cast effectively for their shows as well as training performers to create the roles they need.
Who We Are
The Lab Collective are specialists in creating critically acclaimed immersive and interactive performance who have been making work since 2007.
We have worked in a variety of traditional and non traditional performance spaces, exploring and playing across disciplines to generate an innovative theatrical experience. The Lab Collective's work consists of two strands; experience led installation (which may take the form of a one on one performance), mid scale socially relevant performance which explores current social questions, and their impact on us, and large scale, multi space pieces which typically sit within event or festival settings. Previous work has taken place at: The Roundhouse Studio The V&A museum The Gladstone Hotel (Toronto) Chester Castle Theatre Delicatessen The Bush Theatre Latitude Festival Boomtown Fair The Basement (Brighton) The RAF Museum
Workshop program
Delivered by The Lab Collective, the workshops offer participants the opportunity to experience an insight into Interactive performance and creation. You can get to know the company, get active and be offered some inspirational ideas to increase your skills in interactive theatre with workshops as we explore:
- Conversation with Audiences - Archetypes of the Interactive - Power structures and Responsibility for the Audience - Embracing The Chaos
What to expect
Conversation with Audiences
Having conversation with strangers is easy, but having one that will lead to carefully designed and directed outcomes requires skill and structure. We will look at the kinds of useful structures that can be implemented to help performers effectively engage with audiences. From Sales Structures and products through to large scale flow charts, we can provide the tools to design structures and interactions with audiences.
Workshop length: 4 hours
Archetypes Of The Interactive
Within immersive theatre and Gameplay, roles are often marked by the usefulness to both the production and, more importantly, to the audience. Some of these roles are created purely to control the audience flow and direct attention, and some to directly interact and affect the individual audience experiences. From Companions and Strangers - Gatekeepers to Enemies, we will look in detail, at each of these archetypes, and provide the tools to recognise which roles are needed in an immersive/interactive/game environment. Focussing on successful interaction structures aims to help both Directors and Performers design their own structures to apply these Archetypes.
Workshop length: 4 hours
The Power and Responsibility for the Audience
"...interactive theatre is changing the relationship between theatre makers and audiences but it's worth remembering that often the relationship is one in which the artist still holds most of the power, and the element of choice for the audience is largely illusory" Lyn Gardner
Most interactive theatre pieces are created to give the audience choice to control their own experience, it is the role of the theatre makers to create both real choice, and at times the appearance of it. Over seven years of developing our practice, we have developed elegant solutions to deliver these choices and directions to the audience in an unobtrusive way which integrates cleverly with the performance, character and space. In this workshops we will explore these techniques which will enable the theatre maker to apply them.
Workshop Length:4 hours
Embracing The Chaos
The biggest and most chaotic element of Interactive Theatre is the audience. You have no idea how they will react to you or the piece, or if they will react at all! This workshop offers solutions to difficult audience members, over enthusiastic ones, and those who don't want to engage at all. This is a chance to create ideas together, test them out for each other, and embrace the chaotic world of interactivity with the audience's response at it's heart.
