The Long Awaited
Set in a small Michigan town in 1977, the play focuses on Bessie, a middle-aged divorcee whose focus in life is the care of her invalid mother, Winifred. Marvin Kemp is an Army sergeant who's been looking for Bessie's AWOL brother Vernon, a deserter from Korea, for 25 years. Kemp arrives on Bessie's doorstep, hoping Vernon will show up to visit his dying mother, so Kemp can catch him at last. Kemp's daughter Arvilla is along for the ride, and Bessie's muffler man son Bob finds Arvilla intriguing. The six characters intermix in a comedic drama with Midwestern sensibility.
