FREE Dockside Tour Aboard a Coast Guard Cutter
This boat is a 140-foot state of the art icebreaker. Named after the American Bays, and primarily stationed in the Northeast U.S. and the Great Lakes, vessels like Thunder Bay break ice on the Hudson every year to keep shipping channels open and clear. The Hudson River bears an average of 300 commercial vessels during the "ice months," none of which would be able to travel without help from Thunder Bay and boats like her. But don't worry, in the warmer months cutters are still gainfully employed. They are used for a wide variety of Coast Guard missions, including security within harbors, recreational boat safety, search and rescue missions, and law enforcement. Come on board Thunder Bay and get an inside look at one of the boats that keeps our harbor working throughout the year.
Plan to arrive at Governors Island at least 45 minutes before your tour to allow time to participate in the City of Water Day festival and make your way to Yankee Pier. Please arrive to Yankee Pier approximately 30 minutes before departure time. Tickets unclaimed 15 minutes before departure will be made available to standby passengers.
Note: This tour will not leave the dock. This is a tour of the boat.
