FREE Fire Boat Tour of the Harbor
This is a round-trip tour from Governors Island.
Led by Huntley Gill and the fireboat crew, guests aboard the John J. Harvey will learn about a fireboat that pumped water for 80 hours at the World Trade Center on September 11th. This tour is perfect for children and families. Get ready to get a bit wet during the water display on board.
Built in 1931, MV John J. Harvey, at 130 ft and 268 net tons, is among the most powerful fireboats ever in service. She has five 600 HP diesel engines, and has capacity to pump 18,000 gallons of water a minute. Her pumps are powerful -- enough so that when she and the George Washington Bridge were both brand new, she shot water over the bridge's roadway. She was retired by the New York City Fire Department in 1994 and bought at auction by her current owners in 1999. She was placed on The National Register of Historic Places in June 2000.
Plan to arrive at Governors Island at least 45 minutes before your tour to allow time to participate in the City of Water Day festival and make your way to Yankee Pier. Please arrive to Yankee Pier approximately 30 minutes before departure time. Tickets unclaimed 15 minutes before departure will be made available to standby passengers.
