Matthew Villinger was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. Matthew got an early start playing music, taking piano lessons at the age of nine. When he was twelve his interest turned to jazz piano. In high school Matthew started playing gigs in the area. In the fall of 2007, Matthew began attending Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and graduated in 2012 with a Bachelors in Fine Arts, and in 2015 with a Masters in Jazz Performance. There he studied privately with Reggie Thomas and Peter Martin, who are some of the front runners of today's jazz scene. Matthew plans on moving out to the Kansas City area in August, where he will continue to play music.
