Breaking the Cassia Bough
Following The Visible Theater's adaptation of "Green Bamboo Hermitage" (Best of the Fringe, '05) audiences asked to see more of Auntie, the woman who became a widow before she was ever a bride. "Breaking the Cassia Bough" details the girlhood romance that led to Auntie's ghost marriage. Western-trained performers explore the conventions of Chinese drama, and a new English libretto is sung to classical melodies by the Ming dynasty poet-dramatist Tang Xianzu. www.theVisibleTheater.org
Director: Jon Wai-keung Lowe Music by Tang Xianzu (1550-1616)
The Visible Theater won Best of the Fringe in 2005 for "Green Bamboo Hermitage."
