Juneteenth
We are pleased to announce the Jordan Rustin Coalition's annual fundraising event, our 4th Annual Juneteenth Celebration and Awards Ceremony, being held on Sunday, June 17, 2012 at the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center's Village at Ed Gould Plaza (3-7 PM). Join us in community to celebrate those who greatly impact positive growth in the Black LGBT community through our semi-formal Oscar-themed award ceremony. It will be a red Carpet event, with surprise performances, greetings with community leaders, Castle's Catering, and much more! Hosted by Davetta Stone and O.Smith.
Juneteenth is a uniquely African-American holiday celebrating the day in 1865 that slaves in Texas learned about the Presidential Emancipation Proclamation eliminating involuntary servitude in the United States. June is also the month in which the history and contributions of the LGBT community are acknowledged. As the premiere Black LGBT political organization in Los Angeles, the Jordan/Rustin fuses these two traditions in our annual fundraising event, the Juneteenth Celebration and Awards Ceremony.
