Event

Sacred Drum IV
Established in 1976, the Caribbean Cultural Center, African Diaspora Institute, (CCCADI) sponsors visual arts exhibitions, concerts, domestic and international conferences, and publications, promoting and advancing the vibrant cultures of the African Diaspora in the Americas.

CCCADI's most successful concert series "Sacred Drums", paid tribute to extraordinary drummers from our varied traditions.  The first concert featured drummers from all over the world, including: Max Roach, Tito Puente, Orlando "Punitia" Rios and Mario Bauza.  Now CCCADI is again honored to celebrate the outstanding drummers of three African Diaspora traditions from Brazil, Cuba and Haiti that will be featured in a new documentary produced by C. Daniel Dawson and Ray Grist.

On May 22, 2011, the CCCADI will hold a fundraising-mini concert event to continue sponsoring such important programs.  A portion of the funds raised will go toward Three Drummers, a film featuring Master Drummers Edson "Café" Da Silva (Brazil); Felipe Garcia Villamil (Cuba); and Gaston "Bonga" Jean Baptiste (Haiti).  This documentary explores the African musical and spiritual traditions, through the drum, in the Americas.

This exciting event will include a live performance by Edson "Café" Da Silva and the Puerto Rican group Oba Iré, as well as an exhibition of the powerful, vivid paintings of Ray Grist.  The paintings will be offered for sale, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the CCCADI.

Please join us for cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, the art exhibition, an overview of the film, a video clip, and the live performance.  This will be a special gathering of friends and acquaintances committed to the future of African Diaspora cultural work.
