NOYES ACADEMY NH 1835
NOYES ACADEMY NH 1835
One of the nation's first integrated schools, Noyes Academy, was opened by abolitionists in a rural New Hampshire town in 1835, attracting eager African American students from as far away as Boston, Providence, and New York City. Outraged community leaders responded by raising a mob that dragged the academy building off its foundation and ran the African American students out of town. This early attempt at educational equality was short-lived, but it helped launch the careers of a trio of extraordinary African American leaders who grew up together in New York City: Henry Highland Garnet, Alexander Crummell, and Thomas Sipkins Sidney. Dan's illustrated lecture plumbs the depths of anti-abolitionist sentiment in the early nineteenth century in the north east as well as the courage of three young friends destined for greatness.
New Hampshire native and previous newspaper reporter Dan Billin's passion for history and local stories led him to research a wealth of detail about the largely forgotten tale of Noyes Academy.
Calvin Baker is the author of the critically-acclaimed novels Naming the New World, Once Two Heroes and Dominion, which was a finalist for the Hurston-Wright Award, a New York Magazine Critics' Pick and New York Daily News Best Book of the Year. His long-awaited fourth novel, Grace, will be published in July*.
