CRP's She Stoops to Conquer
She Stoops to Conquer, written in 1773 by Oliver Goldsmith will close CRP's successful maiden season at Grove Haus, this June. 'She Stoops' tells a fast-paced tale of love and a stolen family inheritance all at the hands of two comically dysfunctional families. CRP will ditch the traditional powdered wigs, English accents, and 1700s garb to present this hilarious play in a new adaptation set in a 1980s Florida resort community. When Dick Hardcastle, owner of the Sunnydale Seven Motel, invites the adopted son of his dear friend and used car tycoon'Rich' Charlie Marlow, for a stay and to meet his beautiful and clever daughter, Kate, he's met with an unexpected pair of rude young men (Marlow's son, Marlow JR., and his best friend, Hastings) rather than the reportedly "reserved" gentlemen promised by his college chum. The two father-friends intensions to introduce their children in hopes of a love connection, all go south at the hands of Dick's wife's bastard son, Tony Lumpkin (and the Hardcastle's bumbling assistant, Diggory).
Tony, at the command of his status obsessed, money-laundering mother, is to marry his cousin (yeah, you read that right) Constance, to assure Constance's jewelry store fortune stays in the Hardcastle family. In a move of payback and boredom, Tony leads both young Marlow and Hastings through a series of tricks, causing the poor pair to think they have found themselves in one of Florida's seediest motels, and not the very home of their hosts, the Hardcastle family. Despite the best efforts of Tony and the now insulted Hardcastle parents, love is in the air and Kate begins to fall for Marlow's sweetly befuddled nature, but she quickly realizes to really get to know her nervously stuttering suitor, she'll have to make herself a little less intimidating. She will have to join in the deceits of the night tricking Marlow by "stooping to conquer."
Think this weekend vacation couldn't get any more confused? Well, you'd be wrong, in a turn of odd luck, Tony and Constance find they may be able to escape their fate of becoming kissing cousins with the unexpected arrival of Hastings, who had accompanied Marlow for the weekend.  Unbeknownst to Tony, Hastings had been secretly wooing Constance for some time, and offers to help Tony by taking his "burden" of a spouse. Never one to be shown up in games of mischief, Tony vows to help the lovers escapewith Constance's jewelry inheritance, that his mother has been locking away. Did you follow all that? Twists, turns, love, lies and mistaken identity promise to provide big laughs with this bold new adaptation by Casey Ross. It's off-spring against parent in this classical comedy, getting a whole new spin, coming to Fountain Square, this June.
The play stars a cast of Indianapolis theatre favorites: Ann Marie Elliott (Kate), Max Jones (Marlow), Taylor Cox (Tony), Tyler Gordon (Hastings), Veronica Orech (Constance), David Malloy (Dick Hardcastle), Casey Ross (Dorothy Hardcastle), John Garlick ('Rich' Charlie), Daniel Garrity (Diggory), and Tracy Herring (The Maid). This new adaptation was designed and conceptually conceived by Casey Ross and is directed by returning CRP director David Matthews (Gallery/Portraits-director, Queue-assistant director.) and company new-comer, assistant director, Veronica Orech, who last appeared with CRP at the Indy Fringe and Indiana Writer's Center Short Play Festival.
