The gender-bending rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch will be making a second appearance this spring in the new Brattleboro venue, Headroom Stages, after a very successful first run in July 2010. Brattleboro native Harral Hamilton will be reprising his role as the bitter, bold and brash Hedwig, whose larger-than-life story is, in fact, the story of life itself.
"Hedwig explores the universal themes of freedom, love and identity, and I am so happy to be doing it again." says Hamilton.
Hedwig began life as Hansel, a young boy growing up in communist East Berlin, searching for his "other half." To escape across the Wall, he gets a (botched) sex-change operation and marries an American GI, who later abandons her. Hedwig finds solace in music, but even that gets taken away from her by rock star Tommy Gnosis.
Through song and monologue, Hedwig tells her tragic story using witty self-deprecation and double-entendres. In other words, she makes us laugh. As playwright Paul Rudnick describes, "It feels like it's the best of human nature when the audience is laughing at the same thing. Then, there's a sense of communion" (H. Haun, 1998).
Producer Daisy Frederick, a self-proclaimed Hed-Head, is really excited to be bringing Hedwig back to this community. "So many people either didn't get a chance to see it the first time or want to see it again," explains Frederick. She believes that seeing Hedwig performed live is an experience meant to be shared.
Hedwig's band the Angry Inch, coordinated by music director Scott Griswold, ushers in a blend of pounding rock and tender ballads. "The music literally gives me chills every time I hear it, even after listening to the soundtrack a million times," says Frederick.
