The Bathtub is Screaming: Playing with Magical Realism in Poetry
"The Bathtub is Screaming: Playing with Magical Realism in Poetry" with poet Jade Sylvan

In this workshop, we focus on creating effective worlds in which supernatural, alien, or completely illogical occurrences fit smoothly and serve to illustrate important real-life themes.  We will learn how to draw boundaries within these magical worlds to enhance suspension of disbelief, and discuss how sometimes fantasy can be even "realer than the real."

After the workshop, participants are encouraged to stay for BloomBars' weekly open mic to perform their original works, read their favorite poems, and enjoy a live, intimate performance by Jade in the welcoming atmosphere only BloomBars can provide.

JADE SYLVAN is a nationally-touring poet, songwriter, performer, and teacher.  Her first full-length collection of poetry was published in 2009 by NYC's Spuyten Duyvil Press, and her work has appeared in Word Riot, Decomp, The Pedestal, the November 3rd Club, and OVS magazine.  She has appeared on some of the most renowned poetry and spoken word stages in the country, and has also lead workshops in poetry writing and performance at 826 Boston, Brandeis University, Indiana University, and many other organizations.  In 2010 she began working with Books of Hope, a non-profit based in Somerville, MA, as a youth mentor in performance and creative writing.  Her hip-hop side personality, Madame Psychosis, has a Zombie Apocalypse music video online, and she has just finished recording an album of original folk music.  She does a lot of other things.  You can see some of them at http://www.jadesylvan.com.
