--------------------- ...Nicki Bluhm has taken everyone, including herself, by surprise. Her story began at a New Years Eve party when she sang an impromptu blues song that caught the attention of musician/producer Tim Bluhm (The Mother Hips/Rhythm Devils). With Tim's encouragement Nicki began to write songs and perform in public and soon was earning fans of her own. They went on to record Nicki's debut album, Toby's Song (2008), which appeared in Jambase's top ten debuts of the year. Nicki and Tim were married shortly after.
Her forthcoming sophmore album, Driftwood, shows an impressive progression of Nicki's natural talent. The songs range from the AM magic of Lind Ronstadt to the charming duets of Johnny Cash and June Carter and hints of stoney Memphis soul. Bluhm's ability to look beyond current trends has put her in a class of her own and her sensational performances on the festival circuit have confirmed this. Her warm, strong voice and striking appearance have broad and undeniable appeal.
Nicki and the Gramblers are joined by Santa Cruz's Bryn Loosley and the Back Pages and Chico bluegrass trio The Railflowers to round out an excellent night of exciting original California music at Santa Cruz's legendary Kuumbwa Jazz Center.
