Plants in the Ultramafic World
Serpentine, one of a select group of rocks called "ultramafics," is California's official state rock. Yet its significance as a mineral and as habitat for plant life remains a mystery to many. Taught by botanical consultant, Peter Warner, this class will explore how serpentinite and related mineral substrates provide refuges for many rare and unusual plants, including ferns, trees, shrubs, grasses, and wildflowers.
