Ending Violence and Empowering Women in Pakistan & the Muslim World
What is being done to combat violence against women in Pakistan and what are the social and economic indicators that support programs and legislation that aim to decrease gender-based violence? What is the best approach to women's empowerment in Pakistan, in South Asia overall, and in the Muslim world? What impact would legislation, such as the International Violence Against Women Act have, and should the U.S. tie its international aid to combating gender-based violence?
The World Affairs Council presents Humaira Awais Shahid, Member of the Punjab Provincial Assembly, human rights activist, and journalist, for a conversation on the importance of combating violence against women in Pakistan and around the globe. As a practitioner, Ms. Shahid will also address empowerment of women in Pakistan and the relationship between gender and Islam.
