Captive Audience by David Ives
Captive Audience brings together seven short comedies by David Ives, drawn from two of his acclaimed books of collected plays, All in the Timing and Time Flies. Lauded by critics as "magical and funnya master of language" and "perhaps the funniest writer of short plays in America today," Ives has a wit and capacity with language that dazzles as it disorients, putting "the play back in playwright." In this two-hour performance, audiences will meet a parade of characters including two ancient construction workers who try to avoid building the Tower of Babel in "Babel's in Arms," three chimps made to type away until they recreate Hamlet in "Words, Words, Words," a postmodern composer whose life imitates his music when he meets a former lover in "Philip Glass Buys a Loaf of Bread." "Sure Thing" features a budding relationship that resets several times before they get it right, and in "Captive Audience," a couple is so addicted to television that their TV literally consumes them. Audiences will discover black holes where one's desires are constantly thwarted in "The Philadelphia" and be transported to an exotic land where an eccentric peasant may hold the secret to existence in "Dr. Fritz, or the Forces of Light."
