Matthew Bakkom presents New York City Museum of Complaint
Based on correspondence to the mayor of the city of New York written over three centuries, The New York City of Complaint grew from a conceptually driven site-based public art project into a fine art publication, recently published by Steidl-Miles. Matthew Bakkom will discuss details of this 5 year evolution and also present selections from the book in an evening devoted to the potential and challenges of the archival document as an artistic material. Operating as both a collection of images and a series of scripts these letters give voice to the concerns of the metropolis, directly addressing some of the big issues of eras past alongside the banal struggles of daily life.
