My Island, My Map (Whose Beach?)
When environmental journalist Bruce Barcott moved to Bainbridge Island in 2009, he decided to become intimately acquainted with his new home by hiking and mapping its shoreline. Using his Apple 3GS loaded with the Motion-X GPS app, he set out to make a custom hiking map that clarified public access issues, create a multimedia digital map with photos and video, and even publish a guidebook that would serve as a record and souvenir of his family's first year on Bainbridge Island. A synopsis of his 53-mile adventure was published in Backpacker magazine in May 2010. Bruce will share the many discoveries and challenges of his circum-perambulation and cartographic foray.
Bruce will be joined by Assistant Attorney General Joe Panesko to discuss the legal aspects of shoreline access and ownership.

Bruce Barcott is a 2009 Guggenheim Fellow in nonfiction, and an award-winning author and journalist. His articles have appeared in Outside, National Geographic, and The New York Times Magazine. He has published two books: The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw and The Measure of a Mountain: Beauty and Terror on Mount Rainier. He is currently working on a narrative history of salmon fishing and treaty rights in the Pacific Northwest.

Joe Panesko is Assistant Attorney General in the Department of Fish and Wildlife, where he is primarily responsible for tribal fishing matters. Previously he worked with the Department of Natural Resources resolving aquatic boundary disputes and trespasses, and tribal shellfish harvest agreements. Joe graduated summa cum laude from Seattle U. with a degree in philosophy, and obtained his law degree from Columbia University. He recently wrote a new chapter on the public trust doctrine for the fourth edition of the Real Property Deskbook to be published by the Washington State Bar Association in 2011.
