Endowed Scholar-in-Residence Reception, Lecture & Panel Discussion (Adults Only)
This event is being presented without charge, but registration is required. The reception is open to adults only, please, while the lecture is open to adults and students.
"Innocents Abroad: The Perception of American Culture(s) in Central Europe"--Due to historical reasons, the image of America is slightly different in Central Europe than in Western Europe. Besides giving an outline of possible Central European perspectives vis-à-vis US culture, the lecture aims to show the multifarious, often contradictory nature of the US culture and, as the potential plural ending of "culture" in the lecture title suggests, there is more than just one of those. Discussing the above, the lecturer will always keep in mind his own cultural background, asking questions such as "To what extent is the national character influenced by the nation's culture? How does a big (i.e., US) culture influence a small (i.e., Czech) culture? Can a small culture enhance a big one in return? And if so, what does it have to offer?"
In the 2010 - 2011 academic year, the Endowed Scholar-in-Residence Program is bringing Petr Onufer, world scholar, translator and journalist, to Bishop's and the community. Petr Onufer (born 1976) is a Czech critic, translator and journalist. He studied Czech and English at Charles University in Prague and the University of Texas at Austin. Petr currently works as the editor-in-chief of Plus Publishing, an imprint of the largest Czech publishing group Albatros Media, and contributes to Revolver Revue, a leading Czech literary journal. His translations include novels by William Faulkner, Jack Kerouac and Michael Chabon; poetry collections by Richard Wilbur and Robert Frost (forthcoming), books of literary criticism and theory by Terry Eagleton and Wolfgang Iser. Petr is the editor of the first Czech anthology of American literary criticism, published in 2010. Searching for Contexts of Anglo-American Literature is Onufer's most recently published book of essays on American literature which will be published by Charles University Press in 2011.
The Endowed Scholar-in-Residence Program at Bishop's is designed to bring leaders in the fields of science, arts, humanities, and social sciences to the campus for a period of residency in order to inspire students and faculty towards the highest ideals of academic and artistic pursuit.
